Судьба не совсем типичной американской альт-рок-группы Weezer складывалась так же нетипично. Команду прославил весьма своеобразный подход к гитарной музыке, к текстам, отличавшимся повышенным градусом остроумия, к веселым, задиристым клипам. Их творчество заставляло одних расточать комплименты, других - исходить критической желчью. Изобретательный, ироничный саунд Weezer уходил корнями в стадионный рок в стиле Cheap Trick, равнялся на угловатые гитары в духе Pixies, кокетничал с тяжелым роком 70-х, не скрывая симпатии к творчеству Kiss. Вроде бы не такой уж экзотический коктейль, если не учитывать одно но: страсть Weezer к шуткам-прибауткам, приколом и примочкам и всяческим прибамбасам, повышающим людям настроение.
Начиналось все очень издалека и разыгрывалось не по правилам. Никто из участников команды не мог похвастаться музыкальным образованием, и первым по необразованности был фронтмен Риверс Куомо (Rivers Cuomo). Даже назвать их рок-музыкантами как-то язык не поворачивался. Это были просто взрослые дети, которые от нечего делать тусовались в пустом гараже, слушали любимые записи, что-то наигрывая для своего удовольствия. А могли прилежно учиться в колледже или смотреть телевизор. Риверс Куомо - основной автор и генератор идей с момента появления команды, с течением времени полностью "узурпировавший" власть в группе. Этот "узурпатор" пришел в музыку собственной извилистой дорожкой. Куомо родился 13 июня 1970 года в Йогавилле, штат Коннектикут. В детстве ему пришлось часто переезжать с места на место, в школьные годы он увлекался метал-группами. К 18 годам фермерская провинция окончательно ему надоела, и он рванул в Лос-Анджелес: "Я собирался стать рок-звездой. Но скоро почувствовал себя идиотом и перестал писать песни". Однако неудачи в личной жизни снова спровоцировали приступ вдохновения. Так привычка писать песни и осталась. Слова слишком часто его подводили, поэтому он начал все сильнее полагаться на музыку, отдавая предпочтение постпанку и альт-року.
К 1992 году он почувствовал себя достаточно подготовленным, чтобы самому возглавить музыкальный коллектив. Эту идею поддержали гитарист Джейсон Кроппер (Jason Cropper), бас-гитарист Мэтт Шарп (Matt Sharp) и барабанщик Патрик Уилсон (Patrick Wilson), все - выходцы из провинции, оказавшиеся в Лос-Анджелесе в поисках удачи и славы. Замену ему нашли буквально за три дня до начала студийных сессий. Новым гитаристом Weezer стал Брайан Белл (Brian Bell), игравший до этого с группой Сarnival Art. Опекал дебютантов продюсер Рик Осарек (Ric Ocasek). Закончив студийный этап, музыканты на некоторое время взяли тайм-аут. Они осторожничали и раскручивать альбом по полной программе поначалу не планировали.
Куомо спокойно продолжал обучение в Гарварде, когда дебютный диск "Weezer" появился в продаже. Подчеркнуто юмористический уклон их творчества послужил отличной приманкой для меломанов. Первые промо-синглы "Undone (The Sweater Song)", "Buddy Holly" и "Say It Ain't So", ставшие фаворитами радиоэфира в 1994-95 годах, своим успехом были обязаны и нетипично остроумным видеоклипам. Настоящую славу принесла Weezer песня "Buddy Holly", снабженная удивительным видеорядом. Талантливый режиссер Спайк Джонз (Spike Jonze) применил новаторский прием - вмонтировал оригинальные портреты музыкантов в старые фотографии. Видео "Buddy Holly" получило несколько наград MTV, спровоцировав вполне понятный интерес к дебютному альбому, который стал в конце концов мультиплатиновым. И заслуженно. "Песни Weezer наполнены простыми, сильными гитарными ходами и обаятельными, цепкими мелодиями. Вместо того чтобы воспевать отчаяние, они поют о любви - и это воспринимается как глоток свежего воздуха в пропитанном унынием гитарном поп-роке 90-х", - резюмирует свои впечатления от альбома американский рецензент.
К тому времени когда последний сингл "Say It Ain't So" достиг ушей меломанов, а это было летом 1995 года, команда снова взяла паузу - Куомо вернулся в Гарвард. Но успел за несколько месяцев проехать с товарищами не одну тысячу километров в поддержку дебюта по Соединенным Штатам и Европе. Пока лидер постигал премудрости науки, Шарп и Уилсон времени зря не теряли и сформировали свою команду Rentals. Попытка реанимировать стилистику новой волны вполне им удалась, и их сингл "Friends of P" нашел своих почитателей. Вскоре Риверс Куомо исчез из Гарварда и зажил затворником: его посетило вдохновение и он начал сочинять музыку для нового альбома. С плодами своего одинокого творческого подъема весной 1996 года он познакомил других участников Weezer. В его голове вызрела идея свободного концептуального альбома, в основу которого должен был лечь гораздо более интроспективный, откровенный материал.
Второй лонг-плей "Pinkerton" отличался от своего предшественника более мрачным саундом, жесткими гитарами, напористыми ударными, сохранив в неприкосновенности фирменную смесь гитарного попа и хэви-метала. Изданный осенью 1996 года и встреченный хвалебными рецензиями, он, однако, не имел даже близко того же успеха, что и дебют. Благодарить на этот раз можно было Риверса Куомо. Прогнозы особенно циничных критиков, еще год назад предсказывавших Weezer судьбу группы одного хита, заронили зерно сомнения в его сердце. Сгоряча он решил, что команде следует рассчитывать только на свою музыку и не полагаться на визуальные формы искусства. Зрителей канала MTV порадовать группе было нечем. Впрочем, ко времени публикации сингла "The Good Life" MTV и современное рок-радио решило очищать эфир не только от групп типа Weezer, но и вообще от гитарной музыки с панковским уклоном. В итоге "Pinkerton" едва поднялся до 19 строки поп-чарта (в то время как дебютный диск стал хитом #4) и довольствовался золотым сертификатом. Зато рецензии - по негласной традиции - носили единодушно одобрительный характер.
Тем временем Куомо начал прибирать группу к своим цепким рукам, фактически превращая Weezer в орудие для реализации своих музыкальных идей. Остальные музыканты, хоть и неохотно, но согласились играть роль бэк-группы Риверса Куомо. Впрочем, у каждого из них имелся за душой собственный проект, где он мог проявить себя в полную силу. Когда отшумел тур в поддержку "Pinkerton", команда затаилась. Юмор юмором, но перенести непонимание публики оказалось не так-то просто. Ведь даже журнал "Rolling Stone" назвал "Pinkerton" худшим альбомом 1996 года. Музыканты понимали, что нужно взять паузу и разобраться, что же делать дальше. Все ждали решения фронтмена, но Куомо медлил. Кончилось тем, что Weezer остались без бас-гитариста - Мэтт Шарп предпочел целиком сосредоточиться на группе Rentals. Лучшей кандидатурой на место басиста посчитали Майки Уэлша (Mikey Welsh). К этому времени уже вовсю поползли слухи, что дни Weezer сочтены. Их трудно было опровергать, когда Куомо устраивал концерты вместе с Уэлшем, окрестив свой новый проект The Rivers Cuomo Band, а потом взял шефство над группой Homie, с которой записал пробный сингл. Нашлись дела и у его коллег. Брайан Белл подготовил несколько релизов с командой Space Twins, а Патрик Уилсон гастролировал в составе Special Goodness.
Так прошло четыре года. Казалось бы, о Weezer все давно должны были забыть. Но за время отсутствия команды произошла любопытная вещь. Благодаря некоторым новоявленным подражателям, старательно копировавшим приемы Weezer, неожиданно с новой силой вспыхнул интерес к первоисточнику. И юное поколение меломанов с удивлением открывало для себя героев недавнего прошлого, которых оно просмотрело. Количество поклонников лос-анжелесских шутников вдруг начало расти, хотя новых релизов давно не было и вроде бы даже не предвиделось.
Куомо не сразу решился озадачить меломанов новым релизом. Чтобы разведать обстановку, Weezer отправились на гастроли со всем экипажем Warped Tour 2000 года. Несмотря на длительное отсутствие на сцене, Weezer стал героями фестиваля.
Судьбу саунда снова доверили продюсеру дебютного альбома Рику Осареку. И приступили к записи диска, который команда окрестила просто "Weezer", а фаны назовут "Зеленым альбомом", чтобы отличать его от дебюта с таким же названием. Изданный в мае 2001 года зеленый "Weezer" моментально стал хитом, добравшись до 4 строки поп-чарта в первую же неделю продаж. Казалось, Куомо решил повернуть время вспять и возродить звучание дебютного альбома, но это было возвращение на новом витке творческой спирали: Куомо значительно вырос и как композитор, и как лирик, и как человек. И при этом добился того, чтобы Weezer звучали так же свежо и естественно, как в 94-м году. Фронтмен больше не возражал против видеоклипов. Так что синглы "Hash Pipe" и "Island in the Sun" стали фаворитами радио- и телеэфира. Статус одной из самых модных команд альт-рока Weezer закрепили летним концертным туром. В разгар гастролей заболел Майки Уэлш, его пришлось заменить Скоттом Шринером (Scott Shriner), экс-участником группы Broken.
Осень и зиму 2001 года команда провела в дороге, выступая сольно и в компании с группой Tenacious D. Войдя во вкус, Weezer воспользовались первой же паузой, арендовали студию и подготовили новый лонг-плей "Maladroit", который опубликовали всего через год после выхода "Зеленого альбома". Короткий, плотный, нагруженный риффами альбом состоял в основном их крепких, мелодичных рок-треков. Ничем существенно новым звучание не обогатилось, но во всем чувствовалась уверенность, профессионализм и вдохновение. Меломанам не надо было долго объяснять, что к чему. "Maladroit" финишировал в Тор 5 США, Канады и ряда европейских стран, дав путевку в жизнь двум рок-хитам "Dope Nose" и "Keep Fishin'". А британский журнал "Q" выдвинул альбом и его продюсера Тома Лорда-Элджа (Tom Lord-Alge) на соискание премии Q Award.
Хотите верьте, хотите нет, но томить своих поклонников долгим ожиданием музыканты больше не будут. Пятый альбом Weezer "Make Believe" выходит в мае 2005 года. А в июне начинается европейский концертный тур. Сингл "Baverly Hills" выдвигался MTV как лучший рок клип. Амбиции Куомо прослеживались во всем: тексты, мелодические ходы, идеи альбома. Не смотря на сверх модного продюсера в целом звучание альбома сохранило истинное лицо группы, за исключением песни This is Such a Pity, которая является шикарным образчиком синти-рока.
В 2008 году выходит очередной "Красный" альбом, на котором все те же играют все то же, однако альбом умудрился попасть в широкие массы, так песня "Pork And Beans" имела оглушительный успех прежде всего в интернет пространстве, распространяясь как вирусное видео.
В 2009 году выходит альбом "Raditude".
