Это были как его собственные песни, так и интерпретации чужих творений (так, в копилке Мэтта есть немало записей The Beatles; исполнял он и Let’s Dance Дэвида Боуи).
Технике игры на гитаре он учился по записям Джона Фэи, Чета Эткинсона и знаменитого Джанго Рейнхардта. Сейчас самыми значимыми для себя считает группу Carter Family и великого Луи Армстронга. «Более всего меня вдохновляют старые пластинки, старые песни, прежние исполнители, стили и идеи, — говорит Вард. — Музыка, которую я играю, естественна, она стремится из эры, когда жанры были переплетены: одновременно мы слышим дыхание джаза, рока, фолка. Для музыки это была самое богатое время, но оно минуло, когда эти стили нашли свои собственные пути. Все, что может кончиться, однажды заканчивается…»
В 2001 году случилось не менее важное: Конор Оберст, лидер группы Bright Eyes позвал, Мэтта в большое турне по Среднему Западу и Восточному побережью (включая Нью-Йорк). Вард приобрел немалое количество полезных знакомств, но главное — заручился поддержкой другого участника Bright Eyes, Майка Могиса (Mike Mogis), который принял участие в записи пятого альбома Варда…
